Patterns hold many shapes; the large forms you see from a distance, the intricate details that draw your eye closer, figures formed of negative space and likenesses that only a cloud watcher sees.
There’s something attractive in creating art with no beginning or end but hopefully what’s created is something more endlessly pleasing than endlessly annoying. Despite the recent trend towards the latter patterns always have the possibility for a classic feel. Stripe, dot, argyle, plaid, some shapes never die and these are the underlying structure of even the most abstract or complex prints. On one hand looking back at the classic motifs that have stood the test of time inspires a designer to reach for a simple (and wearable) elegance of shape with a harmony of negative space while on the other hand it offers a challenge to ‘flip it’ with that modern twist which breathes into it new life. Between the archetypal pattern easily ignorable and the loud pattern easily irritable lies that modern twist; that delightful surprise that catches the eye and interests the viewer in an unexpected outcome.
At it’s simplest shape design is like creating puzzle pieces while simultaneously trying to fit them together, fueled by an intuitive search for harmony within the spaces we occupy with shape. Each piece building in relation to the next till we have something that, from afar or up close, feels whole and complete.
